During the last generation there has been much excavating and digging into mounds and ruins of ancient cities, especially of Egypt, Babylon, Palestine, Assyria, and Nineveh.
The discoveries have added much to the knowledge of the ancient peoples, their customs and history. Many of the discoveries have had a bearing on the records of the Scriptures, and in such cases, every revelation has tended to strengthen the Bible statements.
Bible Record of the Flood Proved
The Bible story of the flood has been confirmed and corroborated by facts that are still to be seen written upon the mountains and valleys of Europe and Western and Central Asia, and elsewhere.
Fish, and various other animals and vegetation are found in perfect formation, and in large masses, showing that they were all caught together in some sudden upheaval. The Bible accounts for all this by the simple statement that, "The world which then was, being overflowed with water perished." -- 2.Peter 3:6.
"The rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights," "The fountains of the deep were broken up." Because "The wickedness of man was great in the earth," and "God said unto Noah, look upon the earth; and, behold it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, the end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth." "And behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh." -- Gen.6:11-13,17.
The crusts of the earth and fountains of the deep were broken up, and the earth was flooded with water forty days and forty nights. The cracked up, irregular, striated formations of mountains, and the excavation of fossil animals and vegetation from the depths of the earth, prove the Bible record of the flood.
If "God made the earth and all that in them is," it would be a small matter to create a little destruction. "Wise man, wise man," -- to avoid believing the Bible account, has resorted to various theories to account for the cracked up condition of the earth's surface and the buried animal and vegetable life, such as Evolution, and the changes occurring through "geological ages."
Tower of Babel
"And they said, go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the earth." -- Gen.11:4.
Through their pride and presumption they brought upon themselves the displeasure of the Lord, -- who said, "They have all one language," "Go to let us go down and there confound their language that they may not understand one another's speech." "So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth; and they left off to build the city." -- Gen.11:4,7,8.
After that, the name of the place was called Babel, "Because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth; and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of the earth." -- Verse 9.
This story has been looked upon as a "fairy tale," but today men dig in the very ruins where the tower was built, and its existence has been proven; as to a confusion of language existing all over the earth, that part of the record is true. If this condition did not originate at that time according to God's word, when did it originate? Our first parents, Adam and Eve, spake the same language, their children spake the same as they, and so on down to the confusion of language at the Tower of Babel, after which there were, many different tongues.
Bible Names That Have Been Doubted
A few names of persons, and acts, which have been mentioned in the Scriptural Records, have been disputed by the "worldly wise", as ever having existed, but the evidence that has been brought to light by recent excavations, have corroborated the Bible records.
Abraham's migration from Mesopotamia to Canaan, Joseph's trip into Egypt and their final exodus from Egypt to Canaan, can now all be vouched for by archaeological and scientific evidence.
The story of the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah was ridiculed by critics for years. In 1931, the Pontifical Archaeological Expedition announced the finding of the site of ancient Sodom, near the Dead Sea. Evidences showed that the city had been destroyed by fire, even to its foundations, which is in accordance with the Scriptural statements.
The critics had said that there was no such King as Sargon, mentioned in Isa.20:1. Here again the spade has proved the Bible right. The French archaeologist, Botta, excavating in the ruins of Nineveh, uncovered the very Assyrian palace built by King Sargon. Excavations have established many disputed questions, upholding the statements of Holy Writ in every instance.
The story of Nineveh had been scouted for many years, as never having existed. It has now been excavated by Botta, and the critics have been hushed. There will always be difficulties from denying the records of the Bible. Anything mentioned in the Book, that could not be proven by secular history, has been denied. There is no secular history covering the early events of the world, and so we must believe the Bible. Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible, and they were inspired of God and must be correct, -- and in every question of dispute, the evidence produced by the shovel has confirmed the Bible.
"The modern archaeological discoveries have made the old criticisms of New Testament mistakes, seem very immature. The discoveries indeed have confirmed in a most remarkable way the general and constant accuracy of the New Testament writers in their reports of first century facts and customs," -- Article by Camden M. Cobern, D.D., Litt.D., "The New Archaeological Discoveries and the New Testament,"
